The newest game coming from the amazing game studio From Software, is a gripping, relentless, horrifying descent into hell. Many times I have felt failure and despair. But this game is about the triumphs. They are rare, don’t get me wrong, but they are glorious when they happen. The feeling of over coming an insurmountable foe is just breathtaking and memorable in ways that other games fall short. One boss in particular drove me to the point where I was deleting the game and never playing again. But I took a break, thought about my tactics, returned with a fresh mind and downed the beast. Cheering like a solder that finished his duty at war and was returning home.
Bloodborne is mechanically very similar to the previous Souls games but has some subtle changes that make big differences. For example you have no shield to protect yourself(there is one in the game but its there as a joke). This game is focuses on speed and movement creating a more intense and nerve racking battle system that will keep you on the edge of your seat right up to the final moments.
The world in Bloodborne is shockingly beautiful and the amount of detail that goes into ever object deserves some serious praise. I really felt I was exploring and uncovering the secrets of this mysterious place with ever step I took. Whether I was spilling blood on the streets of Yharman or taking out cackling witches in Hemwick Lane. Each area felt rich with objects and enemies that could be gazed upon for hours.
This game was directed by Demon’s Souls and the original Dark Souls mastermind Hidetaka Miyazaki and his attention to detail is uncanny. One aspect he is well and truly present for is the enemy designs. Each enemy, regardless whether its a boss or just a basic grunt are designed with amazing dept and the current-gen console really allows that detail to shine. I never felt an enemy was out of place and the story plays into why the enemies are designed the way they are.
Overall, Bloodborne is a mind-blowing experience and even though some aspects can be frustrating, the moments of triumph make up for the constant grinding for health potions, poor chalice dungeon design and overly long boss runs. Bloodborne is not quiet the masterpiece as the original Dark Souls but it does a very good job in building a world that is rich of environmental story telling, haunting enemies and amazing level design. Expect Bloodborne to haunt your nightmares as you dive deeper and deeper into its world.
